The poses do have a bit more difficulty than other yoga and are more often than not is part of a series which simply means that the exercises are not done alone. Also the yogi moves from one pose to the other swiftly so the focus stays on strength training and the muscles are always being utilized.  Unless you have some prior training it’s best not to start with ashtanga yoga at once since the poses maybe a bit more rigorous and you might do unnecessary harm to yourself. But if you do decide to try it out, you should do so, together with a class and with a reputable teacher. This is because of the level of intensity of the poses, it is better if you have a good teacher with you so that you don’t harm yourself in the end.

Ashtanga poses do take on a variety of forms, but if you have any idea on yoga, the basics might be familiar. Classes go through standing, seating, balancing, inverted and twisting poses.
